In the Shade of Sherlock Holmes Volume One: The Veiled Lady and Other Untold Tales

The five stories presented here in English for the first time, are drawn from the original series in Italian by the author “All’ombra di Sherlock Holmes”.

Dr Watson reveals five intriguing cases from his unpublished notes. In this collection, Sherlock Holmes faces a series of deeply intricate and haunting mysteries that push his brilliant deductive powers – and his emotions and moral principles – to their absolute limits.

Within these pages, Holmes and Watson encounter:

The Veiled Lady: An elegant lady arrives anonymously at Baker Street seeking protection. Holmes and Watson are instantly drawn into a tragic web of passion, betrayal, and cruel murder stretching from the grand households of Holland Park to the Surrey gentry – a distressing case invoking Holmes’s full deployment of his own, sometimes unorthodox, arts of disguise.
The Ill-fated House: Alarmed by the suspicious deaths of three successive prospective buyers of his Notting Hill property, a troubled Colonel consults Baker Street. Unperturbed by the circulating theories of the occult, Holmes and Watson take up residence under cover placing themselves in peril where Watson’s quick reflexes prove providential.
The Beautiful Widow: When a wealthy young man vanishes, his twin sister turns to Holmes after Scotland Yard declines to investigate. A trail of matrimonial agencies leads to an elusive, strikingly beautiful widow. Enlisting the aid of his invaluable Irregulars and a now cooperative Lestrade, Holmes orchestrates one of his signature ingenious traps.
The Girl from Southfields: A charming country girl met on the train as she was on her way to answer a Times situations vacant notice asks Holmes to watch over her. Unexpectedly prevented from keeping his promise, a deeply distressed Holmes tracks an elusive black landau and a pair of white thoroughbreds and enlists two young ‘votaries of Venus’ to ensnare a cunning serial killer.
The Vampyre Manuscript: The distraught Director of the British Museum knocks at Baker Street: the priceless, uninsured original manuscript of John Polidori’s The Vampyre, written during the legendary Ghost story competition with Byron and Mary Shelley, has inexplicably disappeared from a locked vault. Alerted by a shattered plain-glass lens, Holmes follows a trail of deception leading eventually to the stage of the Royal Strand Theatre and beyond.

Written in faithful homage to the traditional style of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, these adventures bring the genial atmosphere of 221B Baker Street and its classic cast of characters vividly back to life.
