The Sherlockian Interview - Brenda Seabrooke

Posted by Steve Emecz on

The final four volumes (49-52) of The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories are now on Kickstarter (click here). Every day we will be featuring one of the authors in the collection. Today its Brenda Seabrooke.

What’s the name of your story in the collection?

The Carpetbag Case

How did the story come about?

I read that a law was passed in Victorian England that gave women control over their property for the first time. I immediately thought this might cause a man to try to wed before the law was enacted to gain control over a women’s finances to pay his debts and other family members to try to prevent the marriage for their own nefarious reasons. And then a false preacher showed up in the bouillabaisse in my brain and the story began to take shape.

Have you contributed to anthologies before?

This is my 13th Holmes story in MX volumes. Other Holmes stories have been published at Belanger Books and The Proceedings of the Pondicherry Lodge. Four of my non-Holmes mystery stories were published in Best New England Crime Stories (Level Best Books).

Where did you first discover Holmes?

In my grandmother’s front hall wider than most rooms I found a bookcase full of the complete stories of Sherlock Holmes. I was nine when I started reading my way through those wonderful mysteries of foggy London, slavering moor beasts, toxic simians lurking in the murk, killer snakes slithering in the dark…. This was my kind of story!

Are there any writers/adaptations of Holmes you particularly enjoy?

I enjoy them all!

Do you write on any other subjects?

Before switching to mystery stories I published literary stories and 22 books for young readers. My Holmes stories have been published in two volumes - The Persian Slipper and The Crimson Trail.

Where can fans find more about your work?

Amazon profile - Brenda Seabrooke.

I’ll have a website as soon as I can get organized. We have moved about a zillion times - - we were a Coast Guard family - so getting it all together isn’t easy especially since I’d rather be writing a new story.
