The Sherlockian Interview - Josh Reynolds

Posted by Steve Emecz on

The final four volumes (49-52) of The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories are now on Kickstarter (click here). Every day we will be featuring one of the authors in the collection. Today its Josh Reynolds.

What’s the name of your story in the collection?

“The Adventure of the Dreaming Dragon”

How did the story come about?

Mostly I just wanted an excuse to write about one of my favourite minor characters from the canon, Leverton of the Pinkerton Agency. Holmes knows who Leverton is (‘The Hero of the Long Island Cave Mystery’), and seems impressed by him. That alone made me think there was something interesting about him. What was the Long Island Cave Mystery? How did Holmes hear about it?

And then, obviously, I wrote a story that dealt with exactly none of that. As is my way.

Have you contributed to anthologies before?

Far too many to count! Including many Sherlock Holmes-adjacent ones.

Where did you first discover Holmes?

Grade school, actually. A young reader’s version of The Hound of the Baskervilles. After that, I was hooked. I devoured the stories, and then moved on to the television, radio, and film versions.

Are there any writers/adaptations of Holmes you particularly enjoy?

While I’m a lifelong fan of the Granada series with Jeremy Brett, I do have a soft spot for the BBC radio version with Clive Merrison. Fantastic adaption! I also really enjoy author William Meikle’s take on Holmes. Well worth checking out, if you’re looking for something to read.

Do you write on any other subjects?

Again, far too many to count – though, I do have a decided soft spot for occult detective fiction. I’ve even written a few stories where Holmes investigates a supernatural mystery!

Where can fans find more about your work?

The best place is probably my website, JoshuamReynolds. You can also follow me on BlueSky, if you’re of a mind: Josh Reynolds on Bluesky.
