The Sherlockian Interview - Jeff Matthews
Posted by Steve Emecz on
The final four volumes (49-52) of The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories are now on Kickstarter (click here). Every day we will be featuring one of the authors in the collection. Today its Jeff Matthews.
What's the name of story in the collection?
The Disappearing Detective
How did the story come about?
I wrote a Sherlock Holmes Christmas story for a previous MX anthology that we turned into a novella called The Case of the Disappearing Beaune. (That word appears once in the canon.) One of my Facebook readers loved it and asked if I'd do an Easter story with Holmes. When the call came for this anthology, I thought I'd give it a try!
Where did you discover Holmes?
I read The Speckled Band as a kid, and it blew my mind. Not because it was a ripping good story, which it is, but because of Conan Doyle's mistakes (snakes don't drink milk, for one). I realized "this guy made this up out of his own imagination." Until that moment I never knew where stories came from...and that's when I wanted to be a writer, too.
