"So stylistically authentic that Conan Doyle could have written it himself"
Jim Hawkins BSI - author of 'Gift From the Gods: Sherlock Holmes' Stradavarius
Inspector Bradstreet pays a call at Baker Street one evening to discuss what he describes as a “singular” case with Holmes. It seems the only thing young Jacob Walsh, who has been caught in the act and arrested for robbery, will tell the police is his name. Both Holmes and Watson recall a similar case from several months earlier and set out to ascertain whether the two separate, but nearly identical, incidents constitute a pattern.
After interviewing both men, at Scotland Yard and Wandsworth Prison, Holmes decides there is an underlying design behind the men’s motives. After interviewing a third man, who has served time in prison, the Great Detective is convinced there is a master manipulator behind the crimes. Holmes tells Watson, this individual combines the intelligence of Professor Moriarty with the brutality of Colonel Moran. Bringing this blackguard to justice will be no easy task as he always forces someone else to commit the crimes for him.
Eventually Holmes decides the only way to catch this mastermind is by inserting himself into the game. After securing the services of an unlikely ally, Holmes finds himself in the unusual position of being both the hunter and the hunted.
The chess game that follows is an intricate one with feints and parries, and an endgame that can be resolved in only one fashion.
