Early in his career, Sherlock Holmes attends the funeral of his grandmother in Paris where he meets the French writer, Guy de Maupassant.  Constantly seeking new plots, Maupassant asks Holmes for any interesting stories, and Holmes describes a case in which a young clerk attended a fancy ball with his wife.  To appear well-to-do, she borrowed a valuable necklace from a rich friend only to discover that at some point during the evening she had lost the necklace and, in having to replace it, faced a life of ruin.  Maupassant appropriates Holmes’ account to create the classic short story, “The Necklace,” a narrative that departs from the facts in Holmes’ investigation and dramatizes for the detective a writer’s ability to distort reality—the charge Holmes never seemed to tire of aiming at the chronicler of his own adventures.
